Movie Review

They came across their father in the bath: covered in blood and naked, having fallen out of the shower with vomit splattered on his chest and face.

For 17-year-old Andy, it was utterly surreal - a moment so horrific it didn’t allow him to move. His disabled stepsister, Piper, acted immediately. While she’s mostly blind and couldn’t see her step father, she instinctively sought to provide him with mouth-to-mouth and CPR.

By the time Andy reached the bathroom, it was too late for their rescues.

Every night, Andy replays that moment and it terrifies him. Life has been hell since he's dealt with this trauma take a shower? Not an option. Instead, clean up like a dog in the backyard or a garden hose.

Honestly speaking, all of that is ancient history. Now, it is Andy who has more than enough to deal with.

He has been looking primarily Piper for many years assuring that no one bullies her. Even if he is not quite pushing 18. For now, both he and Piper are living with a foster carer by the name of Laura.

Laura used to have a blind daughter who died some time ago and so Laura considers Piper a blessing. As for Andy, well, she clearly would prefer that he didn’t exist.

At first glance, Laura appears to be an ordinary woman tending to foster children, as if she is soothing a sore spot in her life. In her care, however, is a peculiar boy, Oliver, who remains silent and gazes off into space.

There is, however, more than meets the eye. On the more pleasant parts of the world to describe her, there is something that is in skew balance. In terms of description, she is obsessively and strange in nature. The last Oliver is either completely muted or has the free will to wander around the yard devoid of clothing.

Additionally, Piper continues to sustain minor injuries. One morning she woke up with a black eye, and Laura immediately accused Andy of doing it. To be quite honest, Laura had odd things to say about spirits that linger at people’s funerals and dad’s service was no different. She made Andy kiss his dad goodbye which I guess is somewhat understandable, but kissing a corpse, no matter how you spin it, is just absurd.

Yes, there are very concerning red flags about this woman and they wave hysteria. Many of them became visible when Laura started trying to glue herself to his stepsister, working hard to make the girl call her “Mommy.”

Conclusion

I have looked at and critiqued supernatural atrocity pictures, splatter and jump-scare horror films, as well as the most repulsive thrillers and slashers out there. Nevertheless, Bring Her Back is one of the most disturbing films I’ve had to endure.

One significant factor is that the film’s directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, created something that seems and feels all too real.

Surely, the movie has a sinister eerie element to it, one that deals with the supernatural - hellish, gore spewing horrors and the most gruesome rituals that you can ever imagine, including grotesque vomit-inducing cannibalistic feasts.

While the viscera serves as entertainment, much of the film’s remaining content subjects the audience to layers of despair, curses, and anguish that draws heavily on grief. That is, the emotional build-up goes far beyond what is unsettling. Thus, if one considers this alongside the relentless and savage violence against adolescents and children entrenched in the film, it results in an incredible disturbing cinematic experience.

Apparently, there must be some experts in extreme horror who do insist on them being exposed to such suffering. The film producers seem to think that there are many similar viewers.
